No to War in Iran – Joint Call from Conscientious Objectors from Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, and Israel
Gelukkig vindt niet iedereen dat er moet gevochten worden of dat wapenbeurzen nodig zijn. De huidige dominante oorlogsretoriek schaadt niet alleen de planeet en alles wat erop leeft, maar ook de verhoudingen tussen mensen. Je kan alleen maar voor oorlog zijn ‘op een ander’, elders. Wie erin betrokken raakt, beleeft de hel… en de totale dehumanisering. Daarom hebben gewetensbezwaarden en dienstweigeraars uit Turkije, Cyprus, Griekenland en Israël een gezamenlijke verklaring opgesteld: ‘Nee tegen oorlog in Iran!’
The Initiative Conscientious Objection in Cyprus (Kıbrıs’ta vicdani ret), Association of Conscientious Objectors (Σύνδεσμος Αντιρρησιών Συνείδησης; Greece), Conscientious Objection Watch (Vicdani Ret İzleme; Turkey), New Profile (פרופיל חדש; Israel) and Refusers (מסרבות, Mesarvot; Israel) have jointly raised this collective voice against the ongoing attacks and the expanding conflict, and for peace that crosses borders.
“We, anti-war voices from Turkey, Cyprus, Greece and Israel, raise a common cry against the ongoing attacks in Iran and the expanding conflict. This cry is not for the power of states and armies, but for the freedom of peoples themselves.
Every new strike, every new front, means greater danger for civilians across the region. Under bombardments, sirens, and forced evacuations, people struggle simply to survive. As the geography of war expands, the space for peace, free speech and democracy shrinks.
War imposes itself not only on battlefields but on every aspect of daily life. Economic collapse, social division, accelerated pollution and a permanent climate of fear are the invisible chains that militarism places on societies. We reject these chains.
The attacks on Iran risk igniting a fire that engulfs the entire Middle East. From Lebanon to Cyprus, from the Gulf to Turkey, this war threatens the shared future of all peoples. Peace is not only a demand for Iran — it is a demand for the whole region.
This solidarity is a call for peace that crosses borders. Peoples’ safety does not result from governments’ war policies, but from their own organization, discussion and mutual support. States manufacture war; peoples defend life.
We reject the reproduction of violence, and strive to strengthen social security and stability.
War policies weaken the living conditions of societies, while peace-oriented solutions expand freedom, sustain life, and deepen solidarity. Occupation and aggression can only generate new crises; peace secures the common future of peoples.
Today, the voice we raise is a call to protect the future. Let us expand the geographies of peace, not war. The shared future of peoples must be built not under the shadow of weapons, but through the free will of communities themselves.

Aanval VS en Israël op Iran
Ondanks dagen van intensieve onderhandelingen, vallen de VS en Israël Iran aan onder het mom van het vernietigen van de Iraanse kernwapen- en ballistische rakettenprogramma’s.
Wederom zien we van de VS een brutale ondermijning van het internationaal recht. Israël herhaalt de gewoonlijke uitvlucht: ”Het is een preventieve actie”, maar er is beslist niet voldaan aan de juridische voorwaarden voor een aanval met massale bombardementen.
Daarvoor zou het nodig zijn dat er sprake is van het bestaan van een acute en onmiddellijke dreiging, iets wat weinig waarschijnlijk lijkt, aangezien er al onderhandelingen geweest zijn. Opvallend daarbij is wel dat het steeds ging om militaire doelen en macht.
De duizenden burgerslachtoffers die vielen tijdens de recente protesten van januari 2026 kwamen gewoonweg niet ter sprake. Je vraagt jezelf dan terecht af wat de motivaties van deze aanval dan wel mogen zijn.
“Jezelf de autonomie geven om een ander land aan te vallen dat gaat regelrecht tegen het internationaal recht in, ongeacht hoe erg het eraan toegaat in dat land.”
En het gaat er erg aan toe. De VRT berichtte over recente gesprekken met mensen in Teheran waaruit duidelijk blijkt dat de bevolking de wanhoop nabij is. Nieuws over de protesten tegen het regime is nauwelijks buiten geraakt, maar naar schatting zouden er 30.000 burgerslachtoffers zijn gevallen in de eerste twee dagen. Er was niet eens genoeg plaats om alle lichamen te bergen.
Van enkelen horen we zelfs oproepen tot een buitenlandse invasie omdat elk protest gewoonweg onderdrukt wordt. Hoe erg is het dat je moet hopen dat je land aangevallen wordt omdat je zo onderdrukt wordt door je eigen regering?
We moeten dus steun kunnen betuigen aan mensen die tegen hun regering protesteren zonder dat we het imperialistische framework van een westerse invasie goedkeuren.
Even gevaarlijk is de claim dat het steunen van de protesten hetzelfde betekent als goedkeuring geven aan de bombardementen van de VS en Israël. Beide narratieven doen teniet aan lokaal handelingsvermogen en voeden enkel maar geweld.
Vredesactie veroordeelt de aanval van de VS en Israël op Iran. Zelfs in de eerste uren na het begin van de aanval kwamen er al nieuwsberichten binnen dat er burgerdoelwitten waren getroffen zoals scholen. Zoals gewoonlijk gaan er enorme mensenschendingen gepaard met zulke militaire acties.
Zet de veiligheid van burgers alstublieft op de eerste plaats! Onze politici roepen we op om hetzelfde te eisen.
