‘James Barnor – Studio of Life’: kennismaking met een Ghanese fotopionier

Toegegeven, tot voor enkele maanden deed de naam James Barnor (94 jaar ondertussen) ook bij mij geen belletje rinkelen. Nochtans is de Ghanese pionier in de fotografiegeschiedenis een naam om te onthouden. In het Antwerpse Foto Museum (FoMu) loopt nog tot half maart de overzichtstentoonstelling James Barnor – Studio of Life. Die biedt  – na eerder in Londen, Lugano en Detroit te zijn neergestreken  – een mooie kennismaking met Barnors indrukwekkende carrière. Die overspant ruim zes decennia en getuigt van zijn unieke bijdrage aan de dekolonisering van de Afrikaanse fotografie. Er blijkt zelfs een directe band met België te zijn…
