Rellen met Eritrese jongeren in Den Haag: hoe ver reikt de ‘lange arm’ van Asmara?

Zaterdagavond 17 februari 2024 kwam het in Den Haag tot hevige rellen bij betogingen van Eritrese jongeren tegen een festival dat georganiseerd was door regeringsgezinde groepen van Eritreeërs. Dit roept veel vragen op.
 

Het is trouwens helemaal niet de eerste keer dat het in Europa tot gewelddadige confrontaties komt tussen voor- en tegenstanders van het dictatoriale regime in Asmara. Een poging om wat verder te kijken dan de waan van de dag, want er zit duidelijk een patroon achter het geweld: de zogenaamde ‘transnationale repressie’.

The long arm of Asmara: riots in Tel Aviv between Eritrean dictatorship supporters and opponents

On Saturday [2 September 2023] there was a full-scale riot in Israel, with groups attacking each other with poles, bricks and anything else they could lay their hands on. The fighting on the streets of Tel Aviv left at least 160 people injured, with eight in a serious condition. Almost 50 police officers were also injured, most suffering from bruises and other injuries caused by stone-throwing.
